Humanity on the MRT
Tonight while I was coming home, probably the latest I've been out since coming to Taipei, I saw people acting in a way that restored my faith in humanity. I was on the MRT, zoning out to my podcast about some political situation happening in the United States when suddenly my attention was drawn toward my left. A few people moved towards the left and I noticed one man offering a seated woman a package of tissues from his pocket. She refused them and my eyes kept lingering to try and figure out the situation. Two younger ladies walked over, pulled out their wipes and tissues from their own purses, and began to wipe down the seated woman. Looking around on the ground I realized that the seated woman had vomited on the MRT. She looked embarrassed, as would I. The MRT is such a clean place here in Taipei. You are not allowed to eat, drink, or smoke inside the station once you pass these yellow lines where the turnstiles are located. I have never seen anyone make any sort of mess in the MRT so when this mishap took place I was curious as to what would happen. During my ride, I saw various people offer up their own packets of tissue to her, as the mess was quite abundant and had spilled, not only on her, but also the seat and the ground. The kindness in which Taiwanese strangers took upon each other to help a random woman really touched me.
(I wanted to take a photo but thought that this woman would want to keep her privacy especially in a situation like this, so you'll just have to use your imagination).
